Windsocks for Helicopter Landing Sites
Heliports are not officially regulated, however CASA provides the following references in line with international standards and guidelines: CASA MOS 139 and CASA AC 139.R-01 V1. Depending on the application, other guidelines may also be relevant, such as those produced by NSW Health or Queensland Health.
In essence, these regulations propose the use of Wind Direction Indicators (WDIs) and Illuminated Wind Direction Indicators (IWDIs) for night operations. The typical dimensions of Windsocks are 2400x600x300mm (length, mouth diameter, tail diameter). Smaller windsocks may be employed for an elevated HLS (Helicopter Landing Site) as described below. The recommended colours for Windsocks are usually Yellow, White, or Orange, ensuring high visibility against the background at all times.
Helicopter HLS Windsocks
In most cases our standard CASA compliant Windsock 2400x600x300mm (length, mouth Ø, tail Ø) in Heavy Duty Weathermax Fabric will be the choice. Most often a yellow or orange Windsock is supplied - although this does vary.
Our CASA compliant HLS Windsocks are:
- CASA Standard Size Windsock: 2400x600x300mm (length, mouth Ø, tail Ø)
- custom size Windsocks can be manufactured to fit an existing frame
- manufactured from high strength WeatherMax Fabric (220gr/m2 to 271gr/ m2)
- UV fade resistant and very durable
- water resistant
- suitable for extreme environments
- 100% manufactured in Australia

Helicopter Surface Level HLS - Illuminated Wind Direction Indicators (IWDI)
Our CASA compliant HLS Windsock assemblies (IWDIs) are:
- are designed to comply with the relevant CASA Guidelines for surface HLS assemblies refer CASA AC 139.R-01 V1
- accomodate the CASA Standard Size Windsock: 2400x600x300mm (length, mouth Ø, tail Ø)
- have a full Stainless Steel Dual Frame design with Stainless Steel Sealed Bearings - making them very robust and 'fit for purpose' for Australian conditions
- are illuminated with a CASA compliant dual obstruction beacon, or lower intensity beacon if required and 4 high intensity LED Flood Lights
- are mounted on a 6m Heavy Duty Mid Hinged Counter Weighted Galvanised Pole - which is able to be readily lowered and prevents working from height issues
- are made in Australia and fit for Australian conditions
- are able to be retro-fitted to existing installations - depending on the nature and condition of the existing installation

Helicopter Elevated HLS - Illuminated Wind Direction Indicators (IWDI)
Our CASA compliant elevated HLS Windsock assemblies (IWDIs) are designed for Hospital Emergency Helipads and:
- are designed to comply with the relevant CASA Guidelines for elevated HLS assemblies which allow for a smaller format Windsock frame, down to 1200mm in length and 300mm Ø mouth diameter - refer CASA AC 139.R-01 V1
- accomodate a CASA Standard Windsock: we typically use 1800x450x225mm (length, mouth Ø, tail Ø)
- are mounted on a Swivelling which is relatively light in weight, able to be readily lowered and prevents working from height issues
- are made in Australia and fit for Australian conditions
- are able to be retro-fitted to existing installations - depending on the nature and condition of the existing installation

Helicopter Surface Level HLS - Non-Illuminated Wind Direction Indicators (IWDI)
Where illumination is not required there are significantly more options available. Windsocks Australia has developed a robust, simple solution that:
- accommodates a CASA Standard Windsock: 2400x600x225mm (length, mouth Ø, tail Ø) to which Bridle Harnesses are attached
- utilises a Heavy Duty Rotor Arm Pivot to which the Windsock attaches
- the Rotor Arm Pivot is mounted to the top of a 4m to 5m Swivelling pole which is relatively light in weight, able to be readily lowered and prevents working from height issues
- the Swivelling Pole can be ground mounted via footings or attached to a concrete pad or block
- are made in Australia and fit for Australian conditions
